NAIC - National Association of Insurance Commissioners

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners is a national industry association with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.

Environmental Mechanical installed the Association’s computer room and critical use HVAC equipment at their former office in Crown Center in 2005 and maintained it since that time.

When the Association decided to relocate their headquarters to the Town Pavilion Building at 1100 Walnut in October 2010  -where they now occupy six floors- Environmental Mechanical was selected by McCown Gordon as the design/assist mechanical contractor, to accomplish all HVAC installation and facility requirements for the new space.

The tenant finish/improvement consists of renovation of the 4th 9th, 10th, 11th, 14th and 15th floors.

Environmental Mechanical began work in June 2011, installing grilles, diffusers and new low pressure ductwork tied into existing ductwork.  All existing ductwork was cleaned.

With the Association planning to be in the space by the end of the year, and working in an occupied, 38-story building, timing was a key factor, with the main hurdle being coordination with other trades and jobs for access and moving materials in and out of the jobsite.

The data center included:

  •  5 – 10 ton Liebert units
  •  2 – 5 ton  Liebert units
  •  2 – 2 ½ ton Liebert units
  •  Fuel oil system for the emergency generator

An interesting challenge on this project was that the fuel oil piping had to be run in an existing 120” vertical shaft. This work was performed from a boatsman’s chair, a difficult task that EMC has successully undertaken on other projects with similar constraints.
