University of Kansas Medical Center-Labor & Delivery Unit 54

As part of the major renovation efforts at the University of Kansas Medical Center, this project in particular involved the complete renovation of the hospital wing housing the Labor and Delivery Unit – Unit 54.

Overall, this $10m renovation, which updated all MEP components and architecture, added a patient triage area, updated the operating rooms and enlarged patient rooms to make them true labor-delivery suites.

This major hospital renovation was completed in 4 separate phases due to the 24/7 operation of the hospital.  Space constraints presented an especially complicated challenge for the mechanical installation, as the bulk of the work was located in an existing interstitial space and was completed in shifts off of bosan’s chairs.

An additional challenge was that 2 C-section rooms were kept operative throughout the renovation, which presented heating, ventilation and infection control issues.  The Environmental Mechanical team ran temporary duct up the entire side of the building and assured compliance with pertinent air quality measures.

This project received a 2011 Outstanding Mechanical Installation (OMI) Award, a biennial competitive award that recognizes exceptional piping installation.  The award, presented by the Mechanical Contractors Association of Greater Kansas City, recognizes the high level of quality and workmanship of the pipe fitters on this project.

Work completed on the project included:

  • All HVAC demo prior to start of construction
  • Fabrication and installation of all  medium and low pressure ducts
  • Addition of a new hot water heating loop
  • Installation of one 26,800 CFM modular air handling unit with associated unit mounted humidifier and UV lights
  • Installation of 42 VAV zones, which include several Phoenix valves and hot water heating coils at each box
